Whales in the Azores
The Azores, an island group off the coast of Portugal, is located in the middle of the migratory path of several species of cetaceans and other sea life, making these islands a perfect place for marine science. The Azorean people practiced 19th-century methods of whaling, until 1987. Quickly, the economy has shifted from one that profited off of the death of whales to one that relies on their conservation through whale-watching tourism. This dichotomy makes for a beautiful visual story of a small island group and its complicated symbiotic relationship with the sea.
